RECENT SCAMS REPORTED BY RESIDENTS OF LOCAL RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

1. A person called a senior resident and stated that they had found his medical card. The caller knew his name and his grandson's name. The caller asked for the resident's birthdate, indicating that he would like to get his medical card back to him. The senior realized that the caller did not need his birthdate to receive a piece of mail. The scammer did, however, get the name of the city where the senior lives prior to him hanging up!

2. Several seniors received a mailing indicating that by calling the number on the card that they would be removed from the junk mail list. One senior called and the person who answered the phone requested their social security number to complete the task of removing their name from the junk mail list.

The FBI has a common fraud scheme webpage with tips on how to protect you and your family from fraud. Senior citizens are frequently targeted victims.

Bottom line:

  • Never send money or give out personal information (credit card numbers, bank account numbers, date of birth, social security numbers, zip code or address) to unfamilar companies or unknown persons.
  • Take your time in answering anything you are not sure of - legitimate companies WILL NOT PRESSURE YOU.
  • Report any suspicious activity to your facility director, family member or your local Better Business Bureau, state attorney general or other watchdog group.
